OHB Case study >

When we first start to work with clients we are always looking to add value and assist the client to make cost effective changes to processes where possible.

Our new contract assessment process showed that this client was sending out health questionnaires to all prospective new starters and then paying their occupational health service to review the questionnaires to advise on fitness for work.

Process >

We recommended that the following 4 questions only were asked on job offer and a health declaration form completed and sent directly to OH in a sealed envelope only if the candidate answered yes to any of the following questions.

1. Do you have any health/medical problems or physical limitations which may affect your ability to carry out this role?

2. Have you ever had any health/medical problems which may have been made worse by work?

3. Are you having or waiting for any investigations/tests or on any long term prescribed medication (excluding contraception)?

4. Do you need any special adjustments to allow you to undertake this role

In addition, where under HSE Regulation, health surveillance is recommended (audiometry, HAVS, spirometry, confined spaces, FLT driving etc) a baseline health assessment medical should be carried out by occupational health to ensure fitness for the role and to identify any preexisting medical conditions which may affect safety at work or result in future claims.

As a result the client’s process was changed so that compliance with The Equality Act 2010 was achieved. There was also a considerable cost saving as only a fraction of new starter questionnaires needed any occupational health input.
