Why refer Sickness Absence to OH?

Many organisations and HR professionals look to manage sickness absence cases by liaising with the employee’s GP. This does not however provide the kind of fitness for work advice employers are looking for.

If employers or HR write to the GP for a report on an absent employee, the GP will provide a non-medical report which usually contains no more information than they have been told by the employee themselves.

In addition, the time spent waiting for the report can hold up the progress of company procedures, not to mention the high cost of the report. Sometimes a box on the fit note is ticked, but no practical advice is given by the GP on how to return the employee to work.

By contrast, Occupational Health (OH) is the specialism of medicine concerned with fitness to work and advice to employers can be provided immediately following a consultation, without having to request a GP report. OH Advisers give employers information on an employee’s ability and capability to undertake their role and does not seek to medicalise every absence.

The Occupational Health Business Ltd assists businesses to manage employee absence, both long and short term, in a commercially focused way. Our contract is with the employer and we can support existing policies and procedures to ensure appropriate management of all absence cases.

The reports you will receive from The Occupational Health Business Ltd will give you clear actionable advice on how to manage the employee.
